He finished in the top three each of the past three years, but the race was all his Saturday morning on the North Shore.
Baun was second coming out of the swim portion in the Allegheny River but first out of the transition to the bike and spent the rest of the race alone in front. He won with a time of 55 minutes, 53 seconds, beating second-place finisher Joey Pickens, 18, of Glenelg, Md., by more than four minutes.

Can you imagine, he somehow managed to make the big leagues without artificial turf. Wonder if the inconsistencies of our grass fields made him a better player.
Did he play lacrosse in high school? Im guessing he did not. Of course, the turf will help with all the Lebo kids being drafted by the professional lacrosse league. You know, the one you see all over ESPN and CBS. Yawn.
How about, "Congratulations, Ian!" Let's not make this about turf.

Yes, congratulation to both athletes, for their perseverance, skill and love for their sport.
Wish them much future success.
But, if we can't talk about the roll of grass fields here, be sure to cut off discussion of building future winners if we install turf.
Congratulations to Ian! He's one of our top track stars at Mt. Lebanon and a great kid too. It's nice to see his years of training have paid off.
The baseball players are stronger.
The bats are made of aluminum, the ball goes farther.
The baseballs are more active.
The ball will slide faster over turf than grass.
I'm glad I don't play the infield.
