We attended a meeting over in Baldwin and noticed finally that something is being done to IMPROVE Mt Lebanon. Now if they would do something about the mess across the street. FORMER Soccer Coach, nothing from the school board. I sent them a couple of emails about the NBC Nightly News artificial turf report, and not a peep from "For the Board" Cappucci or from any others, including our super super. I'm sure they got them. I'd be curious to see if others sent emails concerning the alarming coincidence of young, field sports athletes with cancer. Your only shot at stopping that project is to find five like-minded school board candidates, get them elected, and they can take it off the list of capital projects. Hopefully those five new school board directors can pass a ban on artificial turf, just as they did in Los Angeles. They can use the $250,000+ in nonmunicipal funds donated to the failed turf project on Cedar* to remediate the stadium field and convert it back to natural grass.

*It has never been declared a "failed turf project," but when we hear that construction was to start on August 1, September 1, and October 1, at some point, the SAB has to admit that it "ain't gonna happen" this year.
My opinion, the local officials have been instructed to zip it up so they don't influence the mid-term election.
We have an important governors race and a state rep coasting in unopposed.
None are offering much in the way of details how they're going to deal with rapidily escalating school expenditures at both the K-12 and college levels.
No definitive answers on construction reimbursements, pensions or healthcare.
If we don't ask, they're not going to tell us their plans and once the election is over it'll be business as usual.
There are only about 22 days left to find out who will do the best job.
A new study of educational equity in PA revealed very troubling practices related to the distribution of financial resources. As a "never ever will think like a bubble head", and someone who has worked with children in West Philly, Appalachia, and all places in between, I think it's a crime to spend educational resources on artificial turf when there are children in PA that have very little to no resources to get a basic education. If I were distributing funds, I would absolutely refuse to permit education money be spent on crumb rubber. The fact that this superintendent and school board wants to exemplifies their self-centered, sheltered lives.
This school board and administration continues to proclaim Corbett/Harrisburg has slashed funding for education.
Look at their financial reports and see if you can find the cuts.
As for turf, they'll clam up and not say a word about the NBC report.

Elaine, I don't believe the $250,000 in private contributions could be just handed over to the school district to remediate the stadium turf or any other project for that matter.
I suppose the municipality could vote to donate to the Capital Campaign Fundraiser but then PK would get a cut and that would be a waste of hard cash.
But then again wasting money isn't beyond these people.
In the interest of accountability, it would be useful to have the governing board from a well established independent private school evaluate the superintendent's defined goals and accomplishments; the silent fund raising project; and the cost-benefit of the costly high school construction project. This would provide a fresh set of eyes for oversight for what has become a continuous drain of the taxpayers' income.
3:08 PM, the $250,000+ are NON-MUNICIPAL funds. They can go to the school district because the SAB had a provision that if the project does not go through, that the funds are to be for field improvements. It doesn't specify whose fields.

School fund raiser traditionally have been done to buy frills for the classrooms, school parties, books for the library.
Suddenly they're now being done to buy the library, the classroom desk, gym equipment.
Tell me is there anyone out there that thinks they aren't paying enough in school taxes? How about natural gas bills, since someone is suggesting taxing gas producers to send more money to the schools?
But there is no maintanence agreement between the school district and the municipality currently. After the YSA, muni,SD gield manintence agreement fell apart I was under the impression each deals with their own fields.
Wasn't the reasoning behind the switch by the SAB and commissioners from turfing Mellon to turfing Wildcat/Mellon.
I districtly remember Franklin or Brumfield writing a while back that their first preference was to turf Mellon.
A side note on the alleged shortage of athletic fields in Lebo : today Saturday, at 9:30 AM & 12:30 PM on a bright sunshiny day, only Dixon field was being used - Middle and Wildcat were unused, but I'll guarantee that Donnellan's field schedule would show them both scheduled and assigned for some youth sport.
