Why: The Mt. Lebanon Commissioners have chosen to disregard warnings about the dangers of artificial turf aired on NBC and CBS. Construction has started to turf Middle and Wildcat Fields with crumb rubber infill made with shredded tires.

NBC Nightly News’ investigation “How Safe is the Artificial Turf on Your Child's Sports Field?” aired an interview with University of Washington Assistant Soccer Coach Amy Griffin. Coach Griffin found a horrible coincidence where 38 soccer players, 34 of them soccer goal keepers, developed cancer. One young woman died at the age of 25.
We continue to learn about communities not willing to risk children's health with toxic turf. Mt. Lebanon is willing to take that risk with your child.
A notice from the school district:
"We have been notified by the municipality that Dixon Parking Lot (on Cedar Boulevard) will be closed beginning October 27, until further notice due to an upcoming turf installation project on Wildcat and Middle Fields."

Thought that the project was to literally start on October 20th.? It's supposed to be a 3 month construction project = they'll be spreading the toxic crumb rubber in January, perhaps on snow.
Hope they all suffer severe frost bite!
The project site map sent to nearby residents showed the inclusion of the Wildcat parking lot. Is that lot not to be used for equipment and materials storage and a contractors trailer?
Dixon lot is supposed to be available for student and public parking, is it not? Where are they to go? Another screw-up by the athletic supporters?

A recent spike in cancer diagnoses among soccer goalies has environmental advocates questioning whether crumb rubber fields, made from old scrap tires, are to blame. According to an article published on Oct. 15 by CBS, Kennedy Catholic High School in Burien, Washington decided not to move forward with crumb rubber infill days before the school’s new football field was scheduled for completion after catching wind of a suspected link to cancer; Flood Law Group LLP agrees with the decision.

Speaking of healthy kids, study findings released today by Pitt, sponsored by Heinz Endowments and conducted HERE in SWPA, connected autism to air pollution.
Air pollution = toxic gases --> overlap with contents off gassing from synthetic turf.

Hey 9:22 AM, I've got a bunch of old tires. Can I drop them off at your house? It's illegal to put them in landfills or for trash pick-up cause they are considered toxic. You might be able to do something with them for your kids.
No, no, no 4:37! You must PAYT because it encourages recycling.
I really hope to see many of the participants in this blog show up to the rally... Time to couple words from behind a computer with action in the public sphere.
