Oldest Eagle Scout in the Nation passed away

I had the honor of meeting Bernard Queneau at a recent Commission Discussion Session. He was being honored for his many years as a volunteer at St. Clair Hospital and at Mt. Lebanon Public Library. We joked about Mr. Queneau, 102, asking for time off of work to receive his citation from the Commission. I had only found out today that Mr. Queneau was the oldest Eagle Scout in the Nation.

Sadly, Mr. Queneau passed away on Sunday. He was amazing and I was lucky to have met him.

A special recognition party and reception was held for Bernie at the Library when he turned 100. Truly wonderful people, he and his wife. So very accomplished and giving. He made the world a better place. I seem to recall that he was born in Belgium.

Thanks for sharing this uplifting story, Elaine. It's remarkable that he died so shortly after the honor. In my experience, sometimes people know when it is the right time to go.

I liked his advice on life VERY much:

"Mr. Queneau urged the crowd to abide by Boy Scout principles such as being “obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave and clean.” He also told attendees repeatedly not to smoke, a request met with chuckles by the crowd".

In his honor, here are the Boy Scout ideals:

As a scout myself, these are still so pertinent:

FRIENDLY -- A Scout is a friend to all. He is a brother to other Scouts. He seeks to understand others. He respects those with ideas and customs other than his own.

COURTEOUS -- A Scout is polite to everyone regardless of age or position. He knows good manners make it easier for people to get along together.

Wouldn't it be nice if commissioners were Scouts.

I think adults with a scouting background have a hard time living in Mt Lebanon right now.

Before last night's Commission Discussion Session, I asked Kristen as she was walking in the room, if she could say some kind words about this extraordinary man. She said that it was not on the agenda. Then she said to ask Steve Feller. I did and Steve said something before the commission meeting.

NOT ON THE AGENDA. OMG. Not a shred of compassion in her body.
