They ARE in Bird Park

Those dirty bastards would never answer our questions. None of them! Not Benner. Not Feller. Not McDonough. None of the commissioners.

I hope you rot in Hell. Not Kelly Fraasch.

All of these photos were taken this afternoon, March 7, 2015.

How many feet is this from the nursery school at St. Paul's? From the Children's Room at Christ Scientist?

The gate is up!!! There is a camera behind the corral, up quite high in a tree. There is a lot of brush towards the trap.

Would someone calculate how many feet Mushroom at Sunnyhill Unitarian Church is from Bird Park?

Update March 7, 2015 6:32 PM Buried Gas Line on Connor Road. I told you!
03.07.15 Connor Road

Does Columbia Gas know that Benner will be firing explosives? What about People's Gas? 800.764.0111. This is where Benner will be shooting his bullets, some or many of which will hit and penetrate the ground. All hell will break loose if he even scrapes one of those gas lines. Sounds like an emergency call to me!

About the Golf Course, sent by a Lebo Citizens reader:

Here are 3 photos taken at the "Golf Course" corral today. I thought originally this was actually in the boundary of the golf course fencing but it is not. (You can see in the one photo titled "downhill side.2" the golf course fence in the background. Very close.

The site is very easily accessible from the Shop N Save parking lot (off of Castle Shannon Blvd).

Accessing this is very simple and the depth of the woods it sits in is not wide at all. Legally access it via a well-worn, flat path. Directions: Park in the Shop N Save lot on Castle Shannon Blvd, using the driveway on the left (if facing the store). Park as soon as you get into the lot, as close to the left side as possible. Look toward the far left corner of the lot, and you will see very visibly a flat path leading away from the lot across a relatively open expanse, before entering just a small bit of woods. Walk ~2 min or so on the flat path and you'll see it on your right. Path seems fairly well-travelled (2 people were walking dogs through in the 15 min I was there.)

It's really shocking that the media isn't watching this like a hawk.

A map of all of Mt. Lebanon with the feeders and corrals might raise public awareness and concern.

The topo maps done earlier are great, but most people aren't used to them.

A map like this with a bullseye or 1000' circle on each and every bait or corral might really wake some people up as to just how close this shooting will be.

http://www.turkey-visit.com/map/united-states/pennsylvania/mount-lebanon-township/mount_lebanon_township_pennsylvania_map_usa.jpg

I'm not good enough with a computer, maybe someone is or knows someone who can

People in surrounding communities within those areas might get rightfully a little worried too.

so you plot the distance, alert neighboring communities-- then what happens?

Better have the new stations informed of the buried gas lines. This is scary. These people are idiots. Just because a few deer eat some flowers. I wondered that once they started the killing there obviously will be blood. Would that not deter deer from going to that site again??

Anonymous said...

@6:57 you send the information to everyone you know living within shootin' distance of those 5 spots.

Depending on the caliber they are using, that's up to 2 miles or more.

That's not really an exaggeration.

They are planning to have people on some sort of a platform shooting at night. Try keeping your balance on a stepladder in the dark shooting a rifle. This is an accident waiting to happen.

Imagine what OSHA would say.

Anonymous said...

The two labels on the map have the same name. The aerial shots are more user friendly than the topo maps.

Still think highlighting locations on the plain street map might alert people living nearby the best.

Keep up the great work!!! :)

Yes, I caught that too, 7:54 PM. I have a call in with the mapmaker to correct the label on the right. I believe that is Mushroom.

Very little of Bird Park is left once the gun-free school zone area is eliminated. Therefore, to drag dead deer out of this section of Bird Park, Benner et. al. will have to use the parking lot of the First Church of Christ, Scientist Church on Washington Road. Have they received permission of the Church? Have they even asked the Church for permission to use its parking lot? The only alternatives would be Washington Road or the backyards of private homes.

I have found deer to avoid an area after the smell of blood is in the air and on the ground. Interesting the gates are not covered, correct? Straw was to cover the ground surface inside these corrals, correct? Seems to be a lot of shortcuts being taken here. Those deer will be flipping out when the gates fall. Deer outside the gate will avoid the area. How many deer are using the corrals? Big fail by the Game Commission here.

The map is being corrected and the second location is Beverly Heights Church/School. Both schools have kindergarten readiness and enrichment programs and are accredited.

Wow .... There are five houses, a gas distribution building and a townhouse across Connor Road that are all within 150 yards of the shooting corral. Three more homes within 200 yards. Each of these could easily be hit with a deflected 22 caliber bullet off a deer skull. I'd be flipping out living there .... no freakin way in my back yard!

Anonymous said...

At least 34 kids hit by cars in Mt Lebanon since 2006 and Mt Lebanon is investing in hiring killers to take out deer and throw them in dumpsters year after year.

Anonymous said...

Chances are these killers have a good aim... but they are full of lies. The deer won't be evaluated by an inspector to ensure they aren't sick before they are killed. So the meat will never have passed any USDA evaluation. Then since the deer won't be transferred to a processing plant within 3 hours (time for rigor mortise to set in), they will be throw in dumpsters.

Mt Lebanon epitomizes the throw away culture -- not just money and time -- but life.

Anonymous said...

7:46 after we've alerted people in those spots what are they supposed to do for the remainder of the month?
Leave home, hide in their basements?
i'd put out corn or bird seed, if the deer can get food elsewhere they won't head for the corrals.
No deer in the corrals, no shooting!

I would like to thank the commissioners for their role in proving to the world that we live in a selfish, overtaxed, soulless community.
I am sad now that we chose to return to raise our daughter as a 3rd generation Lebo-ite, only to have her witness this senseless act in the very parks where she loves to hike and play.

Anonymous said...

From what I am reading, the gun free school zone act applies the boundary to home schools, as well. The home schooling population in Mt Lebanon and neighboring districts is growing. Perhaps, before the killers pull the trigger, they ought to request a list of home schooling addresses from the district. Then those addresses need to be measured from each corral, too.

Anonymous said...

I hope someone has sent notice of these violations to the appropriate authorities and press, and documented the notices sent. It doesn't sound like Mt. Lebanon officials or the Police Chief are responding to Bird Park or any inquiries. However, I think these violation notices need to be sent to them and their lack of response documented, and made part of the record, so that later actions can reference these notices. If Mt. Lebanon officials or police won't address these violations, then notice needs to be sent to the next level of law enforcement. I'm sure there must be some attorneys out there willing to help. Maybe a legal injunction should be filed to stop these violations. My god, why isn't Wildlife Specialists LLC checking the safety buffer zone distances around schools, and why isn't Mt. Lebanon making sure that these regulations are being enforced?

Anonymous said...

8:21 PM "Wow .... There are five houses, a gas distribution building and a townhouse across Connor Road that are all within 150 yards of the shooting corral."

If these homes are within Mt. Lebanon borders, then the PGC special permit allows Wildlife Specialists to violate the 150 yard safety buffer zone. However, if these homes are located in an adjacent community, I don't believe the special permit authorizes Wildlife Specialists or Mt. Lebanon to violate their state mandated 150 yard safety buffer zone. I also wonder about the legality of shooting so close to Conner road. Is Conner Road in Mt. Lebanon?

Anonymous said...

I'm wondering if these corral killing sites on Mt. Lebanon golf course property violates the 150 yard safety buffer zone of the Shop and Save. Is the Shop and Save located in Mt. Lebanon or Castle Shannon?

Also, what about the 1,000 foot safety buffer zone around Myrtle Elementary School, which is located in Castle Shannon.

There must be some safety law about shooting that close to a gas distribution building. That's a major disaster waiting to happen.

In addition, the buried gas lines in that Connor Road corral killing site are a very serious safety concern.

I would think that Wildlife Specialists LLC would need written approval to shoot in these gas line and gas distribution building areas. And I can't imagine that the gas company would give approval, because then liability would be theirs.

Anonymous said...

There is no way that Benner and the other Wildlife Specialists (WS) guy can climb a ladder and shoot these trapped deer in the brain. First, the deer will be bouncing off the walls, and second, there is no way to steady a rifle from the top of a ladder to get an accurate shot. In addition, shooting a rifle from a ladder is insanely unsafe. I thought the RFP said that they will be shooting from an elevated platform, not friggin ladders. I guess WS is trying to cut costs. However, remember, they've never done this before. They don't know what they're doing. Did the Pa Game Commission approve shooting from a ladder?

And how are they going to shoot the deer in the corral sites w/o the plastic cover? There is no chance of even sneaking up on those deer.

Residents and Kelly Fraasch should demand a humane agent present to witness the killing and video coverage, so that qualified veterinarians can evaluate the "humanness" of the killing. Mt. Lebanon and Wildlife Specialists LLC, who have promoted this killing process as humane, should welcome the opportunity to demonstrate their statements.

Laura Simon, The Humane Society of the United States, wildlife biologist, wrote in a Trib. letter, "This plan is inhumane. When the corral gate shuts, the deer will panic and slam into the fencing. The result will be broken legs and necks. If the city goes ahead with this misguided plan, we highly encourage residents to demand that an objective observer or the press be allowed to see this spectacle."

This is going to be a bloody inhumane slaughter.

The Pgh. State Attorney General's office needs to be notified as well as the ATF and FBI and Allegheny Sherrif's Office. There needs to be an investigation in light of violated safety zones, the PGC, local government corruption, and actions leading to a public safety accident and general public safety of everyone in Mt. lebanon. I hope someone is thinking along these same lines. One can make an anonymous report to the AG. Anyone can make a report. The more people that spek out, it will get someone's attention.

Agway in 84 Pa has plenty of corn in stock. 50 pounds for $10. The digestive track of a deer fills up fast this time of year. Use whole corn and place it in out of sight areas. Encourage friends around the perimeter of Mt Lebanon to feed the critters .... don't forget the birds! Once the snow melts it will be easy to conceal kernel corn.

Lebo Citizens said...

I need volunteers to video, if possible. It takes a strong stomach. A couple volunteers have had second thoughts. I don't blame them. I can't do it.

I wrote to the commissioners, Feller, the police chief, Dan Miller and Matt Smith and sent them the Bird Park map and asked them to shut it down. They all ignore me.

All the sites should be marked by utility companies. It is the law that Benner stop his work. He continued building corrals, and now adding gates. He plans on shooting Monday night. It is imperative that the gas companies are notified that Benner will be firing bullets. Mt. Lebanon's take on all this is that it would be on Benner if something happens. So if people get hurt or killed, Mt. Lebanon will say that it isn't their fault. Do you hear that Merlin?

10:28 Had the commissioners had the sense to request proof of concept before proceeding, they would have realized what they bought into.

Wild deer do NOT handle cages well, especially when humans are standing right outside.

Watch how deer react when trapped in cages designed to catch feral hogs.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OPAhVzWqtU

Yes, the corrals in Mt Lebo are bigger. Just remember we're talking six or more deer, at night, taking live fire in each corral.

The commissioners are going to love being associated with this for the rest of their careers. Especially after admitting beforehand that it is inhumane.

Anonymous said...

I've emailed Miller and Smith, and sent them articles a number of times, and I've also been completely ignored. Maybe we should organize a protest at their offices. Maybe it will take negative PR to get them to respond to their constituents. I've voted and supported both of them, but I'm extremely disappointed, and won't vote for them again in the future.

With no elevated stands constructed at the corrals and no cover over the gates, they may think they can get away with shooting from the ground through the gates. Climber type tree stands need a good size tree next to the fences to use.

For anyone planning to video:

It is possible they will try this using night vision gear.

Night vision often uses infrared lighting to augment available light.

Sony Handycams with NightShot are able to see infrared lighting. If they shoot using infrared lights it will show up very very well on these camcorders.

To give an idea of what this looks like, here is a video of a cat with NightShot and infrared. To the unaided eye, this would appear completely dark:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=mD9cF1Ig11A

Now here are some deer videoed on a NightShot

www.youtube.com/watch?v=bz_1_1IU-Ak

Unless they are also planning to put up floodlights, this is what they would see.

Even with auxiliary lighting, this is as good as it would get with night vision + infrared.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NHU1MY9idM

And they are planning to take precision shots on 6 or more deer running around under this?

Anyway, some other cameras also have night or IR (infrared) capability.

If you have friends who are into photography, they might like taking up a challenge.

These cameras may also pick up the IR flash from hidden game cameras ;)

Don't feed deer corn. They can't digest it, and it's no good for them. It can harm them.

Of course, you're trying to save their lives.

Maybe a good quality bird seed and some cut up apples would be better for them.

There is also deer feed that is similar to horse feed, but again, that will screw up their digestive systems.

Of course, anything right now to distract them from the killing corrals would be acceptable.

Safety is a major concern for most residents, and for myself; however, I'm also really disturbed by the cruelty of this killing program.

What kind of men can trap and shoot tame deer families? Many of the tame doe will be full term pregnant, and will have last year's fawns with them. IMO, this is immoral, unethical, and dishonorable. Of course, the Commissioners are no better than the killers?

In addition, killing the deer won't reduce the deer-human conflicts or the deer population long-term. The Commissioners were given study after study showing this by Laura Simon, HSUS' Wildlife Biologist, and were provided with safe and effective non-lethal proven solutions, which were ignored.
The Commissioners chose this dangerous (shooting rifles), divisive, and inhumane slaughter, that won't provide a solution to any deer-humane conflicts. They are all guilty of senseless animal cruelty, and should be viewed with the same dishonor and scorn as animal abusers.

Anonymous said...

It never ceases to amaze me how greed can lead men and women to engage in morally corrupt behavior like this - luring innocent animals into a trap, frightening them potentially to death and then shooting them at close range like fish in a barrel. You all have been told on many occasions that this plan is inhumane. Why are you persisting when the evidence and experts, including a veterinarian, do not support what you are doing?

Whether you hope to gain politically, financially or simply expect to increase your job security by carrying out this order, you must know that you will forever wear the stigma of soulless slaughterers who created a chilling sense of cruel disregard for our humanely compassionate Mt. Lebanon residents and our wildlife.

Why did you sell out? What legacy are you leaving behind? Why aren't you protecting out residents from danger given the proximity of these corrals to schools and nursery schools not to mention houses and utility lines? How can you expect everyone else to uphold the public order when you do not by breaking rules and avoiding questions? Aren't you Commissioners and others involved charged with ensuring public safety? Why are you failing us?

Change is coming, the majority of our residents do not support this and they will remember your participation in the slaughter. Some of you don't care because you are checking out sooner than later, but others will when it comes back to haunt them.

And yes, it's late. You see, I am not sleeping. I live next to Bird Park and now that I know it is an inhumane killing location my sense of peace and well-being has been undermined. The thought of what will be taking place in my own backyard is sickening - so sad for what has been a beautiful haven all these years.

1:52 - please note my deer are fed corn starting the end of September through April when I switch to the 12% protein feed you talk of. Trust me the deer will not eat something that would harm them. It takes about two weeks for the feed switch spring and fall.

Harm comes to deer that are starving and will damage their stomach when over eating. The Game Commission would have you believe that deer only touch noses when fed at concentrated piles which spreads disease. False, deer touch noses and smell each other just about any time they meet in the woods. Spread your feed out so the smaller deer get some also.

I personally have studied the local deer group habits here now for over thirty years with daily notes to reference.

3:13 is correct. The family doe groups are most in danger consisting of the matriarch doe, last years fawns, and generally the sister doe from two years previous. Genetic lines will be eliminated but most important are the does who have learned to avoid cars, street cars and other dangers which traits they pass on to the new generations. End result is more deer impacts with the public when new deer relocate to the vacated areas and they shall!

NB: there is an "easier" way for them to get dead deer out of the Bird Park site. Down the trail from the trap to the Youngwood Drive entrance where they could offload. However there are 2 very noisy dogs in the house nearest to the park entrance. If you live anywhere near Youngwood and they choose that route (and probably the Christian Scientist parking lot too if the CS church authorized them to use it - did they?), know that you will be woken up by the sounds of trucks, dogs barking and dead deer loading at lord knows what hour of the night. If you don't like the idea of that, call your commissioners. This is a dense, suburban area, this is quite simply INSANE.

Anonymous said...

I called the Christian Science Church and spoke with the Chairman of the Board. She told me that Benner never asked the Church to use its parking lot. She said that the Church does not want them to use its lot, and she is going to call Feller and McDonough.

Wildlife agents will have to figure out a way to remove corpses without violating the Federal 1000 foot ban. Unless they leave their firearms at the site. They'll also have to enter and exit the sites outside of this 1000 ft. radius. This means they'll either have to use the church parking lots or park on the street and creep between houses.

Anonymous said...

Well if the CS parking lot refuses to host them (good job 12:14 pm) and the St Paul's parking lot (which would be a long drag up the street past houses) has a Day Care, that doesn't leave many options aside from dragging deer down the hill and over the soccer field. That's a long way.

Shooting begins Monday...
that means Benner's two guys will have to kill, gut, load, clean up the site and transport to a processor an average of 6.52 deer every night for 23 days straight to fulfill the 150 deer killed goal.
i don't think it's physically possible under the cover of darkness.
i'm still anxious to hear how we're going to confirm the take.
Benner believes the protestors are lawbreakers, I'd say, considering his response to corral locations, he may be a bullshitter and we better get solid confirmation he's counting his kills accurately.

Jason M., March 8, 2015 at 9:12 AM. Jason I see no consolation or end to this reign of terror, unless we have good candidate running in next election.

Both the Mt. Lebo Democrat and Republican Committees are run by the elite and entitled minority in Mt. Lebanon, and will run the same hacks as before, who will also likely support all the same atrocities going on now. And then we will be stuck with these jerks, and no change.

Until we can get some new independent minded people not beholden to parties to run for office, I can't be optimistic.

We need new people to step up to run for office.

The opposition to the deer slaughter and the toxic turf are bipartisan. We are Republican, Democrats, and Independents working together. We need candidates from this movement to step up to run for office.

If not, we will be back to the same status quo.

Anonymous said...

12:51 PM I agree, Benner can't be trusted on these deer kill counts, but neither can Mt. Lebanon.

Wildlife Specialists LLC (WS)is looking at a major financial loss with this project. The bottom line is profit for them, and I can't see them even breaking even. They had to buy all of this corral material, and cameras, (cameras aren't cheap), with the risk that they might only use them once. In addition, add their hotel and living expenses, and this could be a major financial bust for them.

So they have a lot of financial pressure on them to kill as many deer as they can to at least break even. With all of this financial pressure, there will be pressure to manipulate deer kill counts.

In addition, the Mt. Lebo Admin. will likely not enforce strict oversight, i.e. to throw WS some of our tax dollars for effort. Furthermore, it is their own self interest to inflate deer kill numbers to make it look like their deer killing program was successful. I think the record shows that Mt. Lebo mgt does not have a track record of transparency or honesty, and they have a vested interest to inflate deer kill numbers so the PIO can spin a success story.

So there is way too much conflict of interest going on here with motivations to inflate deer kill numbers by Wildlife Specialists LLC and the Mt. Lebanon Administration, to trust the deer kill count w/o a trustworthy oversight program of accountability in place, and I haven't read or heard about any oversight program.

Seriously do you trust Benner, Steve Feller, or Susan Morgans to tell the taxpayers the truth.

Anonymous said...

12:51 - you are considering there are 150 deer in Mt Lebanon which there isn't. In all the photos of the corrals, none are showing a heavy use needed to achieve those numbers. Deer bed in areas then travel to feed utilizing the same trails day to day. Then again folks would witness this migration towards the corrals at dusk each night. They need all the sites including Connor Road to produce a good number. The deer sign is not at Connor Road and will be a waste of their time. ( the entire show is a waste of their time 'cept there is nothing else to do where they come from and their getting paid! )

Corral production will drop off very fast this week. They will be real lucky to snag six deer at a time very often.

No guns in a school zone is federal law! Authorized people can possess weapons. A few hillbillies SHOULD NOT get a pass from federal law.

Good Second Amendment lesson here. Turn over your guns and individual powers to the government, your screwed! ITS DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO FROM THAT POINT ON!

I don't have any idea 2:00pm how many deer there are, but I doubt it's anywhere the number being estimated by certain people.
The point is, Benner's taking a stand offish position and when you have hired help taking that attitude, my experience has been they'll screw with you because they think they deserve more.
We need an accurate accounting of the kills, 1 or 150, before we cut any checks for the corral & kill.
I'd also recommend this firm doesn't get hired back bext year.

I don't want anyone to break a law but if someone can get a videotape of this culling, I'd be willing to help pay for/donate to the videographer's time. Is that a crazy idea? Just curious b/c if the muni spins this as successful, it's hard to imagine how many other cruel and evil administrations throughout the country might say, "Well, let's do it this way... Mt Lebanon says it works". The video will demonstrate how gruesome and simultaneously dishonest Wildlife Specialists really is. I've read in other places that people from outside of Mt Lebanon are also looking for a videographers of this event.

Anonymous said...

it's going to be tough to video tape because several of the corrals are in parks that are closed after dark.
carrying a video camera in one after hours is sure to get you busted, but carrying a gun in a Federal School gun free zone not so much.
another interesting double standard, you can't feed deer in MTL and spreading corn or apples or whatever will bring the law down for criminal mischef, but Benner can feed all the deer he wants and get police protection.
which is funny because there is no wiggle room in the municipal ordinance for who gets to feed and who doesn't.

Anonymous said...

Keep this quote conveniently near by for reference in about 3 weeks.

"""For this to work, a large number of deer have to be removed in the first year within a narrow window of opportunity," saidWildlife Specialists project manager Brian Benner. "We take all precautions to do it safely, and at this point this is the only way to really do it.""

http://m.insurancenewsnet.com/oarticle/2015/02/22/mt-lebanons-deer-herd-in-the-crosshairs-a-597957.html

Why you ask!
Because that is about the time Benner is going to go crying to the commissioners that the reason his "never been tried" cull didn't reap a large number of deer is due to the lawbreaking protesters, and that he should be given more time.

Regardless of how he came up short, whether due to sabotage or because it was a stupid plan, he said there was a short window of opportunity.
Since he was the $12,000 consultant that set the schedule, it'll be time to tell Benner to pack up his corrals and ride back to Wellsburg.

people don't want his crew here now, can you imagine the uproar when he fails and ask for more time and probably more money.
